The late Leon Thomas sings a version of Song for My Father a jazz classic written by Horace Silver. It is absolutely beautiful. Thomas had unique jazz/blues style thatincorporated throat ululating yodeling and scatting.
I dedicate this song this Father’s Day to all the father’s who do – who do for their children rather than who don’t do and/or who deny their children.
I especially praise step-fathers, those men who fathered children not from their loins but from their hearts, with their love. Of the many step-fathers I know, several do not have biological children of their own but have reared and loved their step-children unreservedly. My deepest admiration to John, Royal, Gregory, Nate, Marvin and my late (step) father, Hank.
Song for My Father
(Music composed by Horace Silver. (I am not sure if he wrote the lyrics, I could not find a version of the song with him playing it that had words. Performed by Leon Thomas on his Spirits Known and Unknown album, Flying Dutchman Rcords, 1969. Reissued in 2002.)
If there was ever a man
Who was generous, gracious and good
That was my dad
The man
A human being so true
He could live like a king
‘Cause he knew
The real pleasure in life
To be devoted to
And always stand by me
So I’d be unafraid and free
If there was ever a man
Who was generous, gracious and good
That was my dad
The man
A human being so true
He could live like a king
‘Cause he knew
The real pleasure in life
To be devoted to
And always stand by me
So I’d be unafraid and free
If there was ever a man
Who was generous, gracious and good
That was my dad
The man…The man!
Love it!
